Gas Fireplaces
All natural gas fireplaces have two basic components -- logs and a natural gas burner module. The logs are fashioned after actual wood logs using lifelike ceramic fiber, concrete or refractory logs. They are crafted to simulate the look of real wood and are available in a wide variety of wood types. Many are split and charred for added realism. The natural gas burner module creates the flames in the fireplace. Golden flames are made to dance and flicker among the logs by reducing the air entering the firebox and disbursing natural gas through a bed of sand or vermiculite. There is a broad range of innovative designs, from multi-tiered burners to flames that can be adjusted for height and heat output. For even more authenticity, on some units a blanket of rock wool is spread beneath the logs to create the look of glowing orange and red embers.
Most units contain either a safety pilot system or electronic controls that prevent the main burner from operating if combustion cannot take place safely. Vent-free units contain an oxygen depletion sensor, which cuts off the unit if the oxygen level in the room begins to fall.
Natural Gas Fireplaces Can Be a Source of Heat
In addition to beautiful fires, some natural gas fireplace products can produce a substantial amount of heat. Using a natural gas hearth product as a zone heater focuses the heat where people spend the most time. Heating output varies, so you can choose the amount of heat you want to get from your natural gas fireplace by the type of fireplace you purchase. If the aesthetic effect of a beautiful fire, rather than heating, is your priority, choose a product that is certified as a "vented natural gas fireplace". If you want substantial heat from the fire as well as the ambiance, opt for a product listed as a "vented natural gas fireplace heater" or a "vent-free room heater".
Natural Gas Fireplaces Are More Realistic Than Ever
Although the flames in natural gas fireplace products simulate a wood fire with remarkable realism, aesthetic improvements continue. For example, a type of incense is no available to create a wood aroma, and some manufacturers simulate the crackling sound of wood burning in their natural gas fireplaces. Other improvements, like catalytic filters, actually cleanse the air.
